when i worked at the bakery i almost never ate breakfast, because at 6 am i wasn’t really hungry. breakfast is a meal associated with daytime so it felt wrong to eat it when i was still dark outside. i’d just eat something later in the morning if i happened to have a 30 second interval between two customers.

one summer i spent a month at stephan and noelle’s place in los angeles and discovered this radical concept: having breakfast as an actual meal, taking the time to sit at the table in a sleepy way, looking out the window and thinking about the day ahead. and eat declicious things, every day something different.

i loved waking up like a jetlagged bum in their living room to the kitchen sounds and the coffee smell, the whispers and clinking spoons!

A couple weekends ago we went out to get some sandwiches and we stumbled upon a massive “vide-grenier” on Cours Sextius, basically a giant yard sale/flea market along the entire street. We peeked around at all of the stands, where i particularly eyeballed the cameras and typewriters (old habits die hard.)

Just when i thought I’d go home empty-handed, on the very last stand I found precisely the item i was looking for all along: an old medium format plastic camera, it’s a knock-off of the Diana, cleverly named “Dana”. and it only cost me a measly 3 euros!

Today i finally bought film for it. Stay tuned…

we brought daniel to his first art exhibit: Pierre Alechinsky @ musée granet.

it was the opening so the artist was there along with the mayor and some other aixois VIPs.

I’m embarrassed to admit i didn’t know Alechinsky’s work before last night. the odd thing was walking around the museum i felt inspired in a familiar way, like if i had memories of these paintings in the back of my mind for years and years.

his playfulness, spontenaiety, choice of colors (awesome), use of papers, and hat-tipping to the comic strip genre make Alechinsky an instant fave for me. this might sound dumb but i also dig the fact that he’s alive.

I would have liked to talk to him but i couldn’t muster the nerve to bust through the cloud of his entourage. he seemed to get a kick out of seeing a little baby at his opening though, he cracked a big smile when he saw him in my arms. Daniel gives the show two thumbs up (with drool). we will definitely be going back soon, to see the paintings framed by a little less crowd this time.
